Timothy Joseph Allen is an American figurative painter who has been living and working in Rome, Italy for over twenty years.  He began his career in 1992, earning a BA in Studio Art at DePauw University and an MFA in Painting at Indiana University, Bloomington in 1998.  He has been teaching at The American University of Rome since 2006 and has managed his own painting school, the Painting and Drawing Art Studio of Rome, since 2010.

Allen’s medium is oil on canvas and his style and subject matter are predominantly inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque.

Painting is a walk in a vast woods: a meandering search for the trails of the heroes who traveled before, a tangled assembly of knowledge, material and experience, and a treasure hunt that balances empirical analysis with intuitive action.

Of special note: these are no ordinary woods.  They are centuries old.  Probably millennia.  Any ‘new’ trees that try to grow here are readily deprived of the sun.  Only convincing realities of timeless subjects and stories endure.

My goal is never easy, but easy to define: make something worthy enough of these woods to remain.
